Hellooooo lovely readers. I hope you've had some time off for the holidays, and that you spent it wisely... Watching copious children's movies, playing charades and being force-fed decadent food, if you're anything like me. This is one outfit I wore for such an occasion.

The discrepancy between my serious face and the coquettish joy of the Fantasia screencaps I've used, is because it was only after I took the pictures, that I realised that the colours of my outfit HAD to be matched to the pretty pretty pictures.

To save from tagging every single item, if you'd like to know where something is
from, leave me a question!

You may have noticed my clothes are mostly second hand (from vintage/ charity shops, ebay, or handmedowns). I tend to buy my non-basics secondhand to chase the recycling-is-good-for-the-Earth! and bargain! highs; but especially for the thrill of having something one-off. I prefer to shop this way than to buy "trend" driven highstreet pieces, because I feel I can't justify my purchase if I'll get bored of it when I see everyone else in it. I only seem to call upon the highstreet for classic basics. Or to buy the crazy sh*t that I know no one in my local area is going to err.. have the... um.. desire to wear....

On the other end of the money scale, some designer clothes also hold that thrill of exclusivity. And hopefully if they're well made and designed you'll feel a this-is-going-to-last-me-for-ages-and-is-therefore-better-for-the-environment Brucey bonus!

As with a lot of things, I'm attracted to the polar ends of the spectrum, the middle ground just seems too... easy?... How do you guys feel about shopping?
Do you find it frustrating? Do you make your own clothes instead?
Anyway! I digress...

Happily imagining that I have the endless budget of said designer shopper, I've played around with Polyvore. And following on from my Avigdor Arikha post... this is how I would like to dress at the moment. All pale colours, made appealing by combining textures, with a little accent of black. Unfortunately it's a look I'm finding hard to achieve with the limitations of buying secondhand!

I've been so stuck for inspiration recently! And I don't want to post anything I feel is unoriginal... because that's not going to be inspiring... Hence, my absence. I only seem to want to post when I feel passionate about something. But these paintings by Avigdor Arikha, I feel, are definitely worth sharing! The mottled texture of the paint makes them feel distinctively wintery to me, almost as is if they'd feel like wool to touch. And though the colours might seem lighter than your traditional seasonal palette, They represent the kind of colours I'm enjoying wearing these past few days: textured shades of pale, with only an accent of anything else.

I'm starting to get the familier Michelin Man look that layers of November woolies create.
As a '90s child, I rocked this look in order to spend hours watching the local nighttime carnival in the cold...
I still totally love the crazy, giant floats, and even crazier half nude rainbow painted dancers- barely secured on dubious looking platforms.
... So tacky [so good].
... Especially if Sunshine After the Rain is being blasted on loop from at least one float...
[Seriously, did anywhere else do this, or was it a strictly South West of England thing??]

Ermmmr not crazy about my outfit now I see it in that last photograph (bed head... eep!). But hey, it felt good at the time! I wore it when we had that incredible heat wave a couple of weeks ago, and it was inspired in a very literal way by the pieces of art I've included in this post.

And I just have to rave a bit about this articulated gold belt. I love that the hinged detail that for me, just makes it that little bit more special that the Sass and Bide one. And I found it... in err... River Island!

Accessories ruled today... I realised that a plumbing fixture, that I'd bought to make a bracelet with, could be unassembled into four different components of enjoyably different metal textures. I'm wearing three on one hand at the moment. The other two rings are from Spittlefields and Portabello markets.
Other accessories included:
- A pair of wonderfully old-ladyish vintage loafers, with a pleasing amount of flatform.
- A butter-soft clutch bag I made out of a leather hide my mum gave me several yonks ago and I've only just deigned to use it! The fact that these two items match up so well is a wonderful coinkidink.
- A vintage Givenchy bracelet and trusty Casio watch.

Clothes: As with most of my outfits, this was all pretty cheap (£1 secondhand jeans, beautifully constructed unworn blazer £3.40 from eBay, and mens shirt that has alway seems to have been in my wardrobe, therefore £REE!) And as I've mentioned before I love a suit* (*read, co-ordinated, but not intended to be together, trousers and jacket) - the white + white made me feel like I was wearing one. It felt good. (This may be a side affect of being born a shoulderpad-wearing baby of the eighties...)

This is the process of indecisive dressing.
In the end, I wore a single collar, oversized trench and converse. Comfy and practical FTW.
Everything is secondhand apart from shoes, homemade clutch and homemade choker (worn either in hand or on the floor...).

Found some wardrobe wish lists I'd put together (and analy organised into preppy, slouchy and sporty) back in Spring, but never published.
I still really like everything! Save for the two black coats... which probably just don't appeal because I'm still in that colour-full mindset that Summer always instills.
Since Spring/ Autumn share the same weather, now is a good time to revisit them...

[Sometimes, I don't wear blue... But this isn't one of those times.]
I found this oversized blue and white striped skirt in a second hand shop. And had intended to resize it as an on-the-waist jobby. But on the hips it becomes a lovely ankle-skimming bell shape, my automatic reference to which is Little House on the Prairie... Did you ever watch that? I hated it as a child!... It filled the TV scheduling slot that should have been dedicated to short-attention-span cartoons!
I'm over it now. I guess...

Lovely readers, you might have noticed that I like a bit of Photoshop manipulation.
So does 66kf.
I like that she's (I'm assuming these were made by her) loosely played around with putting feminine textures into menswear.
I'm not sure what collection these were originally from. Something Jil Sandery probably. But I'm feeling pretty inspired by hairy, feathery, religious-icony versions. Why not.

So, clutches are big news, right?!
You may achieve ultimate nonchalance, by smooging a squigy, rectangular, leather vessel under your arm.
Especially if you're striding along to somewhere important, with your important hot drink and important communication device in either hand. (I might be getting confused here with a how-to-get-boys type post I once read. Which argued that trendily burdening yourself with a coffee cup, phone, and as many bags as possible in/ under your arms is good, because boys like the vulnerable, struggling-to-cope look.)

... Anyway.. I really like the simplicity of the Comme De Garcon clutches (above), their demure size, and the fact that their bright colour has the ability to cheer up/ complete an otherwise basic outfit. I didn't want to splash loads of money on one of CDG's, so I made my own; with a black leather clutch (bought for £1.24 from a charity shop!), acrylic paint and PVA glue.

If you fancy doing similar, you could easily paint on leather (it's surprisingly satisfying!) without PVA as the acrylic is already pretty adhesive. I mixed in some glue to make sure the colour wasn't too matt (CDG's slightly shiny ones look great), and the glue helps to stop the paint from crackling. I find my green a little too yellow now that it's finished, but I then could easily paint over it sometime with a completely different colour...

wrists, in case one of my hands dropped off. I really like the shape and the
fastening on them. Could Martin Margiela knock some out in silver or gold? Have

Ahhh I've had some fluey virus for such a long time, I'm so bored of it! And no energy means that blogging falls way down on that list of priorities, below err, occasional feeding and showering.

But I managed to get my miserable-looking self up and dressed in neck-to-ankle white. On the assumption that white is virus repelling, since it's the Doctors' coat colour of choice... And I'm also wearing a homemade agate ring. Which hopefully has equally benevolent intent since it's always sold with labels like "harmony", "protection", "strength", right? I should be cured in no time!

I got a bit carried away trying to spice up my everyday outfit with colour! But I really like the combination of wood with blocks of strong colour and white.

I also love this super old binocular case [stolen from Dad]... It's inscribed [with letters I'm pretty sure don't belong to my Pa], it's a lovely size for carrying my crap/ pair of binoculars for spying, the leather straps are all kind of crackeled and the clasp is satifying [but it's too delicate to use often... sad face].

On another note... As I type this, there is some bloke on Hollyoaks [guilty pleasure] wearing MY Topman shirt. He has more right to it, as a man, than I do... but he has kindof, y'know, ruined it a bit. As would seeing any of your clothes on Hollyoaks...

I went shopping in vintage mecca and all I bought were these lousy dungarees... Actually the dungarees are quite cute... gonna post them next. But it's disappointing when you dedicate a whole day to the act of shopping [with a list] and find nothing you want to buy, right?!
For the occasion I lazily reverted to winter uniform, since Summer [season of warmth and sunshine] seems to have been and gone in England. Booo :(

So yesturday, me, my film camera and my tripod all went out for a walk in a sunny forest. I used a whole roll of film on myself and broke my out solo-state only to tip my cap to other photographers also roaming for the sweet spot... And to sing Disney songs with squirrels. I may look shocked in one or two photos - realising just as the shutter went off that a random dog/ explorer was coming at me.

Pretty gutted I forgot to get a decent photo of the back of the the '90s dress I was wearing though... It's all kinda pretty laced-up n stuff.

Bought these trousers in the Topshop sale. Before even touching them I saw there were several pairs left... never a good sign. Plus they'd been reduced down to £10... Hmm, further sign of rejection. But I thought they were pretty lovely! Although not my ideal colour, they're slinky. And swooooshy.

Then in a sort of protest to all those who rejected them in the shop, I ended up taking photos of the different ways I could wear them [definite favourite being the white blouse and clutch bag]. And I used the wallpaper backdrop from Balenciaga's pre-fall 2011 lookbook. Just because.

She's really hit her stride in the last two collections with her BEAUTIFUL [shout it!] minimalism, and simple metal accessories.

On a side note though... Am I the only one confused by the toasty knitwear and layers in the Summer collection, and entirely less-covering pieces in her Winter? Is it one of her subversive themes? I don't know, I'm just a [weather obsessed], [Northern hemispheric!], practical kinda gal.

In his last few seasons I've felt sort-of miffed with him...? Like, he's lost who his "girl" is. Certainly, at least, the styling of his collections puts me right off - always too prim, yet incohesive.

Anyway.. when you look at the pieces undividually, Look. What. Happens!...

Pretty pretty femi-sportswear! If these were just styled down - the jumper with slouchy chinos, that dress with boots and a cardi - then I could love him once again...

2010. Recap.

JANUARY - I went all sugary sweet and pastelly,

and for the first time in ages, picked up a pencil.

FEBRUARY/ MARCH - I had an uber pink moment.. *Wince*. That's quite a lot of pink.

And I went for a graveside stroll in... my studio, thanks to an ancient projector and my Dad's old slides.

APRIL - Paris beckoned. Ohhh so lovely.

Then I took some of the vintage pieces I'd picked up over there, and pranced around in them infront of my camera... because that's what I do.

MAY - I posed with my legs apart apparently. Ooo err.

JUNE - I started photographing Kerry.

I also had a Yin and Yang moment.

JULY - In bright, fresh colours to match the sunshine; most of my clothes came unashamedly from the elderly departments of charity shops/ eBay.

Unfortunately said sunshine had disappeared by the time I had to photograph Chloe.

So I got down with the projector again.

AUGUST - I stood in a hallway.

And sat on my stepper... This is how I like to use it. No exercise for me, eh.

I created a little homage to the "My So Called Life" series.

SEPTEMBER - My Granny Coat!

OCTOBER/ NOVEMBER - POsey Posey...

Finally - one of my favourite buys of the year - this lovely sheer vintage blouse.

These are just some of the pictures I made in the last year... I don't love all of them, looking back; but I'm fond of the learning process blogging experimentally like this has gained me.

... leather jacket on top of leather trousers under denim jacket over denim waistcoat over leather jacket over sheer blouse under fur [of the faux kind]..... Yep. It felt good wearing all those layers. Like each was another piece of protection, literally and psychologically. I'd forgotten that lovely upside to winter.. My CK booties alone double the size and clout of my feet, should i need to do some damage to a pile of fallen leaves!

AKA look how many ways I can sit on a chair!

Went to London last week and got very carried away buying lots of things I shouldn't have. Now I'm feeling bad because I don't in any way need them. I hate the feeling of having spent too much... That same heavy, over-indulgent feeling of having over eaten, except joyfully you can return clothes. This vintage dress was bought in from some forgotten shop in Brick Lane [they all blurred into one...] and is definitely a keeper [lucky dress]!

Also, I'm sorry for my awful hair: it's growing out of my old cropped style painfully slowly, so I'm forced to embrace the "mop-head" look.

Hmmm... Struggling a bit with this transitional dressing. Right now my flat is so cold that I'm wearing two jumpers and sat Michelin Man-like under a woolly blanket. It works for 00:51 in the morning but it can't be such a good look for leaving the house in...

Solution. I am really into the idea of wearing suits. "Suits" in the loosest sense. A nice pair of [peg-legged or skinny] trousers, a super simple top and a great jacket.

This Yves Saint Laurent collection made such an impact on me when it was shown 3 years ago, and it still holds its own. Seriously, go look. Slap some platforms on those models, with long and skinny rather than wide and stubby belts, and you've got Autumn 2010!

Hanneli always works a good shorts "suit".. here, and here are favourites. Actually matching suits are pretty inspiring too, they're just harder to achive on a budget! This one on Emsedge is good, as is Elin's Acne.
